We often think of Spike Milligan as a joker – a humourist. This poem is a good example of his nonsense verse for children:
Bongaloo
‘What is a Bongaloo, Daddy?’
‘A Bongaloo, Son,’ said I,
‘Is a tall bag of cheese
Plus a Chinaman’s knees
And the leg of a nanny goat’s eye.’‘How strange is a Bongaloo, Daddy?’
‘As strange as strange,’ I replied.
‘When the sun’s in the West
It appears in a vest
Sailing out with the noonday tide.’‘What shape is a Bongaloo, Daddy?’
‘The shape, my Son, I’ll explain:
It’s tall round the nose
Which continually grows
In the general direction of Spain.’‘Are you sure there’s a Bongaloo, Daddy?’
‘Am I sure, my Son?’ said I.
‘Why, I’ve seen it, not quite
On a dark sunny nightDo you think that I’d tell you a lie?
Spike Milligan
Here’s another, read by me:
But then I am reminded how many emotionally deep and intense poems he also wrote, which are far less often read. This one is just one example:
When I Suspected
There will be a time when it will end.
Be it parting
Be it death
So each passing minute with you
Pendulummed with sadness.
So many times
I looked long into your face.
I could hear the clock ticking.Spike Milligan
It’s good to remember that he was more than his most popular poems.
Best wishes

I like Spike. Thanks!

Me too! In some ways I especially like his more emotional works – they really speak to me.

I still think his writing and VO work on “The Goon Show” showcased his talent more than anything else he ever did. Not to take anything away from his other endeavors, as the man was brilliant all the way around.
Can I ask what kind of mic you used in that clip? What a wonderful read that was. Bravo.

Hi Dangerspouse (love your name! Ha!) – I was introduced to Spike Milligan through my Father’s love of the Goon Show, so yes, for me his poetry supplements his other achievements (and I can mimic many of the Goon Show characters as well!).
My mic is a dinky little Samson Go Mic – it’s not bad considering I have no studio to really get the best out of it.
I’m glad you enjoyed the reading – I had such fun doing it! Thanks for your comment! 🙂

A Samson Go, huh? Just goes to show once again that technique trumps technology. I thought you were gonna come back with a Shure or Sennheiser model. Incredible. Kudos to you!

I picked it because the reviews really showed it was capable of so much more than most people expected. It cost about £30, so pretty cheap, and thank you, it does the job nicely! 🙂

Wow, I’ll have to keep that in mind should I ever need one. Your levels were all over the place but that Samson never got over loaded when you belted one out, nor did it drop off when you were more sotto voce. Were you using a wind screen or mic cover? Sorry for all the geeky questions, but I’m just so impressed.

No problem! No I haven’t got a mic cover or widscreen – I keep meaning to buy these things, but haven’t got round to it yet. It’s just straight into the mic. One thing I do (when I remember) is switch off the speakers on the PC, and I also paid about £3.95 for Samson’s own recording app. I get the best sound with that, but I still use the same mic sometimes with MovieMaker, and it manages OK.
